I have reviewed primarily young adult novels. I try to read 'grown up' books too, but there just aren't enough adult stories about zombies, body swapping, super powers and alien invasions. Books I give negative ratings to are a gazillion times better than all the books I 'haven't written. :) These authors are all, in their own way, 'awesome'.

Hold Me Closer, Necromancer by Lish McBride
My rating: 3 of 5 stars
It starts out good. The first few chapters start out with Sam, who has just arrived for his shift at work at Plumpys, a fast food establishment. The description of his day is humorous, and I am sure that many people can relate to the type of day Sam is having...
Then things gets really far fetched. The story follows the adventures of Sam, our soon to be necromancer, and his friends, Ramon, Kevin and Brooke. They are all Plumpy's employees. Brooke's career at Plumpy's is tragically cut short when she becomes an undead animated head. Her character reminded me of the girl/head in the movie, Transylmania , which IMDB rates as terrible, but I thought was a excellent 'B' movie. Both heads were really upbeat considering their situation...
The book spends a lot of time with the set up of the story, the characters, their powers, politics etc... It jumps around a lot and some chapters were really tedious, especially the behind the scene looks at Douglas, the villain. He is apparently a bumbling idiot, but he is also described as a powerful necromancer who is supposed to be intimidating and have a lot of influence. I enjoyed Brooke's character, but it seemed risky and stupid to send an animated undead head as a message to Sam. Brooke talks a lot and a talkative head wouldn't be the best way to keep the underground supernatural Seattle Fae existence under wraps. This is just one of the many nonsensical things the villain does. The whole powerful, yet stupid, bad guy thing was a bit hard to grasp.
Luckily there was enough humor to keep me interested. The back jacket says this is the author's first book so maybe she is working on a sequel. Its good for a first book and I would read another book by this author.
