I have reviewed primarily young adult novels. I try to read 'grown up' books too, but there just aren't enough adult stories about zombies, body swapping, super powers and alien invasions. Books I give negative ratings to are a gazillion times better than all the books I 'haven't written. :) These authors are all, in their own way, 'awesome'.

The Forest of Hands and Teeth (The Forest of Hands and Teeth, #1) by Carrie Ryan
My rating: 3 of 5 stars
This was a very solemn story, with very little joy. There was unrequited love, loss, misconceptions and misunderstandings of romantic relationships, a complex love triangle and of course zombies. I love zombies...
Many of the details and event sequences were questionable. The author often backtracked to explain previous events. I questioned the practice of the sisterhood allowing a zombie to return into the unconsecrated population when they were so fastidious about everything else. Then again there are many rationales in our modern day society that I find just as puzzling. The breach could have been described in more detail. This community existed for years and suddenly one very spunky zombie causes a breach that falls the whole town...
I guess an attempt was made to create characters who were not one dimensional... It was frustrating that Harry wouldn't allow his brother, Travis, to court Mary when there was an obvious attraction between the two. Yet it was impossible to dislike Harry and his feats of heroism and kindness. Unfortunately I never really understood why Mary preferred Travis. I think an aspect of Mary's personality was that she was in search of something she might never discover. The zombies are greener on the other side?
I wish the next book started up where this one left off, but it appears as though The Dead-Tossed Waves focuses on the next generation. I guess I will have to read it and see.
